The yellow red flames reflected briefly on the water, together with the last of the green, revealing the ghostly outline of seared trunks, before the wind came, sucked in at gale force to feed the burning. Soon we were paddling for our lives so we didn’t get sucked ashore, the radiant heat, flying embers and smoky black sky erasing the brief glimpse of the seductive beauty of the heart of the fire.”
