The seed cones lay in the winter sun, slowly bleaching from brown to white. The pixies came out at night, with their little paint brushes and added a touch of pale blue, their favourite colour; and they were pleased.
It is generally accepted that children in possession of keen eyesight see better than their elders. What is less well known is that young eyes are more sensitive to the blue end of the spectrum. This is one reason children don’t like green vegetables, by not seeing the reds the greens are less warm and become muddy and uninviting. Before you ask, meat is brown but the aroma for the most part overcomes all other misgivings, as does the taste.
The sensitivity fades with age, but until it does, children can see what adults cannot. Ephemeral things, like pixies, and elves, and fairies. In the garden, mostly, when the sun is low, when the weather is cool, the possibility of mist is high. The shade too, shadows providing cover to the little creatures, and tangles of vines and cottage garden flowers.
Children, are by definition, curious and short. So little creatures are more likely to be seen by them.
So when the pixies came out at night, and did their work, the children would see in the morning, and know who did it. And they would be pleased.
